Today's episode is a fun one. I went back through my Instagram DMs at Naomi Meredith underscore and pulled out all of your questions about Makerspace. A little feature is that you can use the search bar in the message and I just typed in Makerspace and pulled up those conversations that I have had with some of you.

I'm not going to mention your names, but listen carefully because maybe it's the question that you have asked me or maybe it is a question that you were hoping to ask me and you were so happy somebody else did because I am going to answer them in today's episode. When the kids design and make something, do you have any suggestions on who gets to take the creation home or do you have them all make it? I have 22 to 25 students in my classes, so I've been having them work in pairs to save on materials. Yes, I almost always have kids work in pairs or groups of two or three. Four can be a lot, so then I'll just do two and two, but almost always I have kids work in groups when they are creating a Makerspace project.

There are a few reasons for this, one being the materials. If every single kid is creating their own project, you're going to run out of materials really, really, really quickly and they don't need to be creating their own. Side note for my new after-school programs that I am hosting at various schools I'm traveling around, the kids are actually creating their own projects, but they're paying for the after-school club and part of the cost of the club is material, so that is a whole different thing.

But in a classroom setting, the goal is to have kids collaborate, work together, and problem solve, so I almost always have them work in groups. Sometimes at the beginning of the year with the little kids, I will have them create their own only because those projects are really short, they can be done in one day, they aren't a lot of materials, like maybe it's one piece of cardboard. Super easy for me to get more cardboard.

Have you seen my garage of flattened Amazon boxes? So sometimes I will actually have the little, little kids create their own because they're just going to take it home that day, but for the most part they do create their own project. Now, managing materials, I have them typically used by makerspace menu, so almost every single item they have access to has a price, they have a budget they have to work with, I have actual Monopoly play money, they have to pay for their supplies, and this really helps them think about what are they using in their project, are they using too much? Well, they can't because they have to buy it, so that helps a ton with the actual projects. Also, think about the size, I talk about this a lot, their projects are usually really small, they can fit in a gallon Ziploc bag, who says their projects have to be huge? They don't, they take longer to build, so I make sure their projects are smaller.

When it comes to taking their projects home, I love, love, love using Seesaw K-5. Now, I like Seesaw in particular, again, not sponsored, I've used it forever since I've taught as a classroom teacher, but I love Seesaw because the kids can take videos and pictures of their work and explain what is happening, and they can take multiple of these, and this is really good for parents to see. Some, if not most kids are okay with just the photo or video of their work, so they don't really feel like they need to take it home.

Some kids are cool with, hey, you just take the project home, no big deal. Some kids are in a partnership with someone they live next door, so they make a deal, I have the project for one week, you get it the next week, and if it is a whole big issue, then we do rock, paper, scissors, and that's just the way it goes. Here and there, you actually might have groups who nobody wants to take at home, so what I tell those groups is, okay, if you don't want to take it home, deconstruct your project, anything that can be reused, go put it away.

Some of the projects you can't take home. There are some projects I do with water, it's soggy, you can't take it home, and that solves a lot of problems. So that, yes, all of these people, by the way, that messaged me, I did answer them, but these are the longer responses that you get to hear my beautiful voice.

Hey, Naomi, I was a primary and elementary art teacher for the last two years, and I was asked to take up the responsibility of the STEAM and maker space. It was definitely challenging at the same time, exciting to head into unknown space.

The words that you mentioned, that you were the only one in the school who was zero clue what the curriculum resonated with me. Your content and podcasts have been a glue to make my resolve of giving my best at this role. I have all the K-5 STEM year-long plan bundle, and the things I need to start are the maker space bundle.

I was wondering if I needed anything else besides these. Well, thank you so much for your kind words. That is very, very nice.

Yes, I was the only STEM teacher in my building, so I taught third grade for six years. Then I walked into a new-to-me district, new-to-me position, new-to-me school with zero curriculum, and a pat on the back, good luck, which I'm cool with that, but it's a lot. It's a lot on your own, so I did develop my whole curriculum K-5, still developing and teaching curriculum.

I'm actually working on a lot of maker space. I'm going to talk about that in a second, but I am so glad that everything has been really helpful, so thank you so much. That's so nice of you.

I do have a maker space bundle, so the K-5 STEM year-long plan are the lessons that I taught with students K-5, and they are very much project-based learning lessons. Many are maker space lessons, but not all of them are. The maker space bundle specifically has some other just one-off maker space lessons that you can do with any kids at any time.

It also includes the maker space menu that I just talked about. It's editable, so it has all the items, the prices I suggest, and the method behind the madness. I also have my maker space label, so everything can match.

They have words and pictures, different colors that can match your classroom, easy to read. I'm editing and creating actually other sizes to that, so that's really helpful as well. There are also some other helpful posters in there, like a hot glue gun poster, which some of you, and I know Kelly Hogan does this in Mathematically Enthused, actually frames the posters and put it at their station.

So the maker space bundle, again, has those getting started lessons and some other materials that will help you create that climate and culture in your classroom, but really complement the lessons in the K-5 STEM year-long plan. So curious, when you have a sub, do you alter your lessons, or do students still have full access to your supplies and materials? I said typically no. For the most part, when I have a sub, I almost always know I'm going to be gone, so I will plan ahead with a project where maybe they will finish a project before a sub comes in, or let's say it's midweek.

Now, I was very spoiled with my schedule. I had kids five days in a row, so I would maybe have the kids work two days, they have the sub, do some random project, and then they would get into the maker space project. I didn't want to burden the sub and teach them, here's how to do maker space money and manage everything and hot glue guns and tape and all of that.

No. So typically no, I didn't actually do those types of projects. I would just do a one-off type of project.

Now, if it's a digital project they're already working on, let's say 3D printing, usually I'm okay with the class working on that when I'm not there. Robots? Not so much. Hour of code? Sure.

With K-2, I almost always would leave a book and a small building challenge where these are the blocks you can build with and they have to be cleaned up and put away at the end. When in doubt, Lego bricks are always a great option. I actually would write that exact sentence on my sub plans.

So the short answer, no. Now, funny enough you asked about sub plans. I think I mentioned this in another episode, but I am actually going to be long-term subbing for one of my STEM teacher friends in the district I taught in.

So from mid-October to mid-February, I'm going to be teaching K-5 STEM at the school I did Lego Club at. I will actually be teaching my own curriculum and also coming up with new things. So I'm excited to talk about that experience with you, what it's actually like being the STEM sub.

We collaborated me and that teacher. I'm like, hey, don't worry about it. That's a lot of lessons.

What do you want to teach? I'll teach whatever. I'll choose cool with that. So that's going to be really fun to report out on and also give you some tips and tricks for when you are writing sub plans.

I do have an episode about sub plans, but what is it like being the sub? Okay. And the last question, do you have recommendations for doing STEAM on a cart? I will be doing K-5. So I'm assuming this teacher has started the cart already.

Some teachers actually taught STEM on a cart during COVID or some people that's just the method they have because of space, or maybe you're in a couple of different schools. I did see a really cool cart at Ikea that actually they modeled it as an art cart, but I'm also teaching STEM on a cart. So I have after school programs that have partnered with some schools in my community where I am actually teaching one day makerspace challenges and bringing everything in, in a cart.

So what I would say to get started, because I can do, I will do a full episode on this and this person, I even said that, but to really get started, I would organize all of your supplies where it's easy to grab and go. So I actually just redesigned my home office where all of my cardboard is in a bucket with a lid. All of the buckets are the exact same and they can be stacked and be ready to go.

Now, if you're going into kids' classrooms, they probably have their own marker, scissors, glue, glue sticks, crayons. So you don't have to worry about that. Actually during COVID, I had kids bring in their pencil boxes.

It was actually really nice because I didn't run out of anything. What I like to do is I use those photo boxes that are colorful and rainbow, and I will actually put supplies in there. So I have all my crayons in multiple buckets, glue sticks.

A lot of them can fit in these little containers, by the way, glue sticks, rubber bands, those types of things. I put those in that little carrying case, and then I will take out the materials that I want them to use and put them in caddies. And I have some heavy duty caddies I bought off of Amazon that I can set in different table groups of very specific materials I want them to use.

And then the buckets with those materials I brought in, I will actually limit how much they can use of each one. So maybe I'll use the Make Up My Space money depending, but if it's a one day challenge, which a lot of you going into classrooms it is, I just put on a sticky note with a number, like you can have three pieces of cardboard, have three dots on it, and they can grab as needed. Hopefully those of you who are teaching mobily, you have some sort of home base.

Like if not, if you can't do any of that, like nothing, then I would even ask the teachers classrooms you're going to be in, hey, can I come in before school, plug in these robots, make sure they're charged, maybe put a basket on them so they're not distracting, so that they're already there when you get to the classroom. So you might have to think ahead where things are stored or set things in locations around the school. So like for that day, you know, oh, these materials are there.

So those would be my biggest tips for Mobile's Gen. I hope it was really helpful hearing the answers to some of the questions that you have asked me. There's something that I find super interesting in the elementary STEM space. Oftentimes, we are given these amazing spaces and we are tasked to do amazing and innovative things with our students. But we are given zero curriculum and zero budget to do so. Don't get me wrong, you can do a lot of awesome stuff with recyclable materials, but you definitely want to level up when it comes to those amazing resources that we want our kids to get their hands on. I know that you are feeling it too. A little while back, over 70 of you filled out my podcast survey. Thank you so much for doing that. I got a lot of great insight as to what you're feeling right now and what you're needing, and to help me plan future episodes just like this one. There was a common theme when it comes to gathering materials in your space, and how this is definitely a struggle for you. Some of you even said that there is an issue with the budget, gathering materials, planning activities that won't break the bank, and very little resources and materials. I completely understand and that's why you are definitely going to love today's expert, Jennifer Mahin. We have been chatting over the years over on Instagram, and I noticed that she was getting a lot of awesome supplies through grant writing. In fact, over the years, she has gotten funded over $32,000 worth of supplies, and combined grant writing to build up the space for her students. Yes, you heard that right, $32,000, not all at once, but just a bunch over time. She was a lot like you. She was given a brand new classroom with zero curriculum and zero tools to do these amazing things in STEM, so she took it upon herself to do all of this awesome grant writing. Thank you so much, Jennifer, for being here. Okay, this topic that you're going to talk about, I'm so excited about because before we hit record, you said a lot of people ask you about this topic. A lot of people ask me about this too. And I knew that you would be the perfect person for this when it comes to getting supplies for your classroom and writing grants. I've done a few over the years, but I know that you have a lot more experience. I know it's really hard when we as STEM teachers are creating a program pretty much from nothing. It's pretty rare that everything's handed to us. We want to or expect to do all this cool stuff and then we don't have stuff to do the cool stuff. So I'm really excited to hear all about that today. But before we jump into that, if you wouldn't mind telling us about yourself, your teaching background, and then how you stepped into your role as a STEM teacher.

Yes. So my name is Jennifer Mahin. You can find me on social media @jennasuarustech. I feel like that's usually what I'm known by. My name is actually Jennifer. I am in my 10th year of education, my fourth year of teaching STEM. Prior to that I taught fifth grade math and social studies for three years. I also taught special ed for three years, two years, severe profound disabilities sixth through ninth grade and then one year of just second through fifth grade special ed. I honestly never pictured myself as a STEM teacher, maybe like, I don't even know like looking back from when I started teaching to where I am now. I'm like how did I get here? But I loved integrating meaningful technology into what I was teaching. I went to tech conferences and things like that, and I kept learning about STEM and learning about computer science. As a fifth grade teacher, I started integrating coding into my math curriculum. And my social studies was so boring. Like, if you don't know, fifth grade social studies, it is like up to, I believe the 1800s.

Oh, that's good.

It's like math. So what I did is I started integrating STEM into that and trying to make it more hands on, more fun, and just getting that cross curriculum in there. And that's kind of what got me interested in STEM. And I was also getting my master's in instructional technology. So like, all of these things happening at once. And that's how I ended up here.

So I feel like I stories are very similar. And I think we've talked about this over the years. Also, I did not know you taught special ed. I had no idea. That's super important too. I mean, teaching all the kids in the school, you have all the needs, all the IEPs that we still have to meet. So that's actually really valuable experience in your STEM role. So I think that's actually really common with a lot of STEM teachers listening. Whereas, oh, we like technology, we like STEM. All right, I think I'm qualified to be the STEM teacher. It's kind of how it goes. That's how it was for me for sure. So I don't know how I'm still qualified. But here we are. Full of them. So when you stepped into your space, was there a STEM program before? Or was this something brand new to your building and your district?


Jennifer Mahin  06:36

So I'm really like the only STEM program in our district. Now we have a little bit for sixth grade, but like, there's not much in our high school, literally at all.

Whoa!


Jennifer Mahin  06:46

It blows my mind. Like we have such a huge Makerspace and a STEM program here in our elementary, so like not to barely have it. And we have it in sixth grade, but not beyond that it's like, mind blowing.


Naomi Meredith  06:58

Jennifer Mahin  06:59

I know, I know. I've been helping and working with that teacher to write some grants and get that one. But so I when I was teaching fifth grade math and social studies, you know, it kind of all started in a few different ways. We had a keyboarding teacher and kids, that was one of the specials, they would go to keyboarding, like twice a week. And that's literally all they did was keyboarding in those 30 minutes. So at the time, I knew I wanted to start integrating more like STEM based stuff. So I also knew there was potential to be that a STEM program could be coming with tech integration. So that's kind of like I wrote a grant, in hopes that this would be a position we were creating. And if we weren't going to create it, I was just going to be this fifth grade teacher with like, the coolest STEM stuff. So it definitely, like we had nothing. And I'm from a small rural school district like, we have 250 kids in our preschool through fifth grade.

Like our town is so small, like I live in a town of 297 people. Yeah, the town I teach in is probably like, I don't know, I would say like 1800. So again, not a lot of people.

Oh, wow!

We did not have money for this program. So I was kind of like thrown into this program with literally nothing. I think they gave me like a stapler. And unlike the keyboard covers, but I mean, there was there was like nothing, except for maybe what I brought from fifth grade and teaching special ed but like I had, I had nothing to start a STEM program.

Oh my gosh. And I think that's very common. Sadly, that's so true. It's like, Hello, welcome to your job. But you don't have curriculum, nothing. Yeah, you have to teach all the children with your imagination. I don't know. It's like pulling out of the Barney bag. Like what's in it today? I don't know if you know that song.


Jennifer Mahin  08:55

It's so accurate, though. Because it's like you're being thrown in. And that's I think when people talk to me, it's like, how did you do what you've done? Because so often we're thrown into this position with minimal STEM experience and, like, make magic happen with yeah, here's $250. But now you teach every single kid and not just like 40.

Yeah, yeah, you're like good luck. Okay, thank you, like $200 can barely buy one LEGO Education Kit.


Jennifer Mahin  09:24

It can't. Prices went up. 


Naomi Meredith  09:28

They have gone up. That's true. So that's why I asked you to be on here because you have stuff now. And so what successes have you had with writing grants over the years? So it's your fourth year in STEM. I know you have a lot of stuff now. So what things have you been able to purchase and you can even just start from the beginning kind of the process of what you've done, because it's really awesome what you've done.


Jennifer Mahin  09:52

Yeah, so that May I wrote a grant for $5,000. Like yeah, if I get the STEM program $5,000 I'm gonna, it's gonna be awesome. And then I got $5,000. And I'm like, I need more. I mean, $5,000 didn't even cover what I wanted or needed, or thought I needed. And then, so that would have been May. August, I wrote another one for $5,500. And luckily, I was awarded both of those. And then after that, I kind of kept writing grants. But I learned the hard way that you know, I didn't always get them. And I didn't always maybe research enough of what I ordered, so that I get some things and I'm like, looking back, I wouldn't have ordered those things. But you know, as a new STEM teacher, I didn't know what I would need, or I didn't know what would like how, okay, those kids I started with in Kindergarten four years ago are now probably smarter than I am. And I need to push them.

Yeah, that makes sense too. Yeah, because the gap. That's another thing. I don't know what I mean. What were some things you regretted purchasing. We're not throwing any companies under the bus. But you're like, oh, this wasn't great.


Jennifer Mahin  11:01

So Well, I have like LEGO essential LEGO prime. We do 2.0 Brickey motion. I love all of those. Yeah, in the beginning, I ordered the LEGO boosts robot. Oh, yeah. It's a great robot. If you're like a child at home, ah, really lesson based as much as it is like coding, super fun to build, but it wasn't conducive for our space. Like it took way too long to build.

I see. Yeah. 


Jennifer Mahin  11:30

And the other one that I wouldn't purchase again, would be I think they're like, Jimu robots.


Naomi Meredith  11:36

I don't even know what that is. 


Jennifer Mahin  11:38

They're really neat. I went to a tech conference. And they were like, Oh, these are great. And I was like, Oh, they're great. But at the time, they didn't have like a curriculum or a way to save student progress and things like that. And for me, that was important. And I also wouldn't order things with 9000 batteries again.

Yeah, yeah, that makes sense.


Jennifer Mahin  11:59

But I also think it's hard. I think, like, as a new STEM teacher, you see STEM teachers who have a lot of followers, and a lot of people who kind of promote things. So I saw some things that teachers were promoting, like, oh, my gosh, I need that. And then I realized afterwards, I think it was an ad and not something, you know what I mean, they're actually using. So I have like, these little critter robots, which I wouldn't.

I've seen those. Okay, Well, that's good to know.


Jennifer Mahin  12:29

The reason I wouldn't order them again, is because you know, your Bee bots, your robot mouse, they all turn like an angle. The critters go for like a y turn around. It's so different than what you're teaching and coding and things like that. So definitely research things before you purchase it. And if you see someone cool sharing it doesn't mean you need it. Yeah, absolutely.

I know. And I'm very, I think I've talked about on here various times, picky about specific things that I'll buy, because I've had the same thing happened, like, Oh, why did I buy that? Or there were things that were kind of leftover in my classroom that were cool, but they were for older children. So like, I had things that were made for like middle school kids that were left in my classroom, like I tried. I tried with like, a GT class, they couldn't even do it. And like, this isn't, I can't use this. Like, I was so bad. And I donate them to our middle school. But I think that's good to keep in mind. Yeah, definitely want to research. So when you wrote the grants, did you have to list out what you were going to buy? And like, how did you find these grants? Because that's a lot of money to ask for. Like, how did that all work out?


Jennifer Mahin  13:41

So altogether, I probably have been awarded over $30,000 over four years, which is a huge amount of money. But I started our STEM program, I started our Makerspace program, and now I've helped our sixth grade, kind of get like a STEM once a week thing. I'm trying to help them get it up and going. So at the time, Well, I don't say at the time, but like my husband, he at the time, his role was economic development. So he kind of knew some grants too like a direction to steer me and he doesn't do economic development anymore. But I mean, he's still helped me with grants. Yeah. But where I'm located, we have like, it was called Dane Hanson. And it was a local foundation, like Republic County Community Foundation. You know, you have Donors Choose, you have some, like Bayer fund, large STEM grants. There's so many different things like Duclos foundation for me personally, I think, looking like if I'm giving advice to people, I always tell them look at what your local community foundation is, look at what your local groups are, because there's so many groups wanting to give money to education, especially if you're doing technology or STEM or something hands on. Like if you're showing how it's real world connections. People want to support that. And I will say I definitely didn't get all those grants and how was like heartbreaking Yeah, I remember I wrote a grant for $8,800 and Then when you write a grant, like if I want these 15 robotics kits, I have to list every one. Like, you know, when you're writing grants, it does take time. So when I doing that, I don't get them. I was so. But I had to really stop and look like, okay, my first few grants were super easy because I was building a program. But now when I wanted to do a Makerspace, it was like, Well, you don't need this. Why should we give you the money? So I really had to stop and think, Okay, I live in rural Kansas, What sets me above other people that's going to make you want to give me money. And for me, it was our fifth graders were going on a STEM based field trip, and they were driving two hours away to Manhattan, Kansas. Oh, and no school at the time, within probably a 45 minute drive, even has a STEM program. So showing, hey, this is a need, you know, yeah, we're in rural Kansas, but I want our kids to be able to compete with bigger towns, I want them to like, make connections with industry here. Because you know, you can work remote, you can do so many things. So once I really keyed in like, Hey, this is what I want to do. Why I want to do it, I'm going to share it with other community members, like Hey, bring the Girl Scouts bring the four h people bring in other schools for free, because Alright, a grant for them to come do cool stuff. Like, that's a good idea. When you identify your needs, it definitely plays plays a role in making it work more.

Yeah. So instead of saying I need this stuff, like, here's how it's gonna make an impact. And that would be specific. Yeah.


Jennifer Mahin  16:35

Yeah, say, and for me, it was really tying in. I want my students in rural Kansas to have the same experience as kids in a big district. You know, I don't want them to be held back because of where we're located. And I don't think so once I really played up that part. Yeah, play it up. And for me, it was even tying it into our industry. We have a lot of, like manufacturers here. But this is preparing students for the real world. This is how I can tie it in. And even some of those businesses will like donate to schools and donate to certain things like that. So I'm like, Hey, I'm writing a grant, so that my kids can work for you in the future, if you want to give me money. I'm gonna take it. Yeah,

Yeah, like you said, they are looking for connections. Sometimes those companies don't even know how to reach out. Like, it's like where it's opposite. We're scared of them. Like, oh, we don't want to ask, but then the company is like, we don't want to ask, we don't know how to ask. So it's like kind of a two way street. We're just kind of like, I don't know where to start. So when you found the local partners, did they have grant opportunities already? Or did you reach out like blind like on an email like, Hey, I would like to write a grant. Here's what I'm thinking, or was it kind of a mix.

So the the majority of the ones I've done like Dane Hansen, Donors Choose or republic County Community Foundation, they're all local. Dane Hansen's over a larger space in Kansas, but they were all ones that it was like a republic county is twice a year. The Dane Hansen's once a month, the Duclos is like twice a year. So I knew I kind of researched it and found those. Like, when I saw the Bayer fund one that was maybe like, once a year or something, but certain people, like I reached out to them, or if it was, like some of them, you could just find them. Okay, so googling.

Okay, so just like even Googling, that's a good point. And, and yeah, you never know, when you asked are there? Do they ever give you like a template that you have to fill out? Or do you have, like a specific format that you use when you write a grant that works? So obviously, the storytelling and how it makes an impact? What do you do for that when you actually write it?


Jennifer Mahin  18:41

So for grants, so far, everything I've done, it's like, you create an account. And then it's like specific questions like, what's your impact? And how is this going to impact your community? What are your goals? How are you going to reach your goals? How are you going to tell us if those goals were met? What's like, what makes your air like what how do you stand out more in your area or something like that? It was very, like a template that they're providing for you. And I just had to sell myself in 250 words or less sometimes,

Okay. So that's helpful having that template, because that's hard to know where to start. Like, I don't know what to write. And you can probably reuse some of them stuff, too. If you save it in like a Google doc on the side, I would totally reuse that.


Jennifer Mahin  19:24

So that's what I do for most of them is I type them all out in Google Doc. And then I copy and paste them that way. You know, a lot of my answers I can reuse or even like, I have a lot of people who asked me for grant advice and like, Hey, here's what I've done. And that way you're not seeing like my school's EIN number, you're not seeing like our diversity or our you know that we're a title one school so I'm not sharing that with like, those specific people or whatever they're trying to find out.

Yeah, exactly. So for your grants, you mentioned you did like a Makerspace one and then some other things. Do you typically be like I need all this random stuff? Or now are your grants like I would like to do something like more focused? How do you format all of that?


Jennifer Mahin  20:08

So my very first, I would say two were building my STEM classroom. After that it was building my Makerspace classroom. Following that one, it was more of like, Hey, this is what we've done. And it's great, and we appreciate you. But now I have these kids who are here, and the stuff that I have is like to hear. So I need something to still push those kids and challenge them. So I kind of just use that approach now. Or it's just been something specific, like, this is what we would like. And this is why.

Yeah, that's a great way to put it. And that's good, too. Like, if you already have things, where where are your kids going to be? Because I totally agree with you. It's my fifth year instead, what my kids are doing now is way more advanced than than what they're doing. At the beginning. I had fifth graders who could not log into their username and password. They did not know what to do. I can relate to that so much. Yeah. So now they can do it. Like yes, we can do this. So hooray. But totally different. Like the LEGO we do. 2.0 was hard enough for my fifth graders at the time, because they weren't used to collaborating in that way. Now, it'd be like, Oh, piece of cake. like, Where's, where's the next thing? Where's the next thing, but so important that what you're doing? Because, like you said, you're you want them to compete with other schools. And that's so important. And some times we do need some cool stuff to do it. Like, I can't do I mean, yeah, you can do cardboard every lesson that if that's where you're at, that's where you're at. But it is really nice to have some of the fancy stuff, too.


Jennifer Mahin  21:48

And especially for me, like in the beginning, you know, I didn't know what I was doing. I didn't make a chart or like a map of my curriculum that first year, because it was fine, because everyone could use the same thing. But now it's like, okay, first grade has to do this second grade, you know, does this and it definitely different has to differentiate. Yeah, and I mean, I have things that I use, and I try to find things that I use with all the grade levels, that it like, breaks it down. Like I don't know, if you have the spike, essential.

I do. And I just bought more. I love them. 


Jennifer Mahin  22:17

I love them. And I don't think they have like 20 lessons for groceries. 20 lessons for second grade, some that are third through fifth like that. They know what they're doing with that kit, because Oh, yeah, it was so many grades. And I mean, I love the LEGO we do. But it's so I feel like it's so much more advanced now, because you're using with more grade levels, and it's challenging or easy. And it's, I love it.

You actually get that look, it got tougher. I agree. I totally get that kit. People don't believe me. I'm like, No, it's like multi grade. Like it really actually. It's like, how am I I don't know, they just like really thought through this. 


Jennifer Mahin  22:53

It's all standard base. Like it's not just literacy and computer science. But it's also like, I think it's NGSS science to you, which is great, because then you can get that buy in from other grade levels and other teachers like, Hey, I'm doing this for a purpose. 


Naomi Meredith  23:05

Oh, yeah, you're like, we're not just rebuilding, it's actually like, really actually doing something. So that's good to keep in mind too, when you're writing your grants, like finding things that can be used for more than one grade. Has that helped you in your grant writing, I'm sure like it can be used for this great blah, blah, blah.


Jennifer Mahin  23:20

Yes, I think I think my grant writing from year one has evolved so much now like I still will do like Donors Choose and some of those things, or even like a local one every now and then. But in the beginning, I was asking for like five to $8,000 every time. Now, I'm like, can I just get like $1,000 a lot, or, you know, I'm asking for more of like a specific, like, I just got the spike essential at the beginning of this year. So which the price went up. And they were kind of expensive, but it's like I just needed something new to add. So probably for me, I'm at the point where if I just add one thing new every year, I'm gonna be happy. I mean, I don't have to, but I really like to.

I know. And there are new things that come out. And we want the kids to kind of experience that to not kind of we want them to experience that, too. So it is important to kind of just keep your eye out of not every bright and shiny item like you said like not everything's good. There are some staples that you really want. But yeah, with the upgrade, like we know LEGO education kits are good. And so they this upgrade is worth it. So just kind of being mindful and talking to STEM teacher friends and podcasts or whatever and doing all that.


Jennifer Mahin  24:26

And save money for storage containers because you never think of that you can use for all of the stuff you're about to start to buy. Yeah, I'm gonna be like, where do I store this? I don't have a container and go for the expensive ones because they're better. 


Naomi Meredith  24:38

Yes, they are better. Dollar Tree containers don't work. Wow. They break. That is really good advice. Actually. Speaking of advice, so you've went through the process. Is there anything else like kind of like a checklist like what you should do when you're writing your grant and like things you would recommend?


Jennifer Mahin  25:00

So one thing that I have learned is things that work across grade levels, definitely minimum batteries, or at least a rechargeable battery, align it to other standards. So teachers don't think you're just playing. And the last one is probably my favorite, I look for things with replacement pieces for free, like Osmo is fabulous. So we do that a lot. Or like teachers use it in stations. But if you if something like breaks for them, they replace it for free. And that's fabulous. Because when you're investing in some of this stuff, like I don't want the spare pieces, I don't want to spend 50 bucks to buy something that just breaks in wear and tear, or like Snap Circuits. Sometimes they'll replace pieces, things like that. So I would say definitely look into replacement parts, or like what's the replacement plan is for education before you purchase it, because that I mean, that helps me sway a little bit. Like, if you're if you have good customer service, and you're going to support educators, I'm gonna give you my money.

That's a really good point, like the longevity of a tool, I would never have thought about that like that you could do right that in your grant, like, I know that they have this replacement plan.


Jennifer Mahin  26:10

I have. Like when I was doing 3D printing, I kind of put in there, you know, I'm choosing this 3d printer, because it has someone who does every single thing is everything every single Thursday, they'll do like a two hour zoom. And if you hop on you hop on and they'll help you and if not me who had no knowledge of 3D printing or how to fix them. And obviously, I've we've chatted about 3D printing before.

I thought you built your printer. Didn't you build that to build them? 


Jennifer Mahin  26:38

I had to build these three massive 3D printers, like had no idea what I was doing, and then making them work. I mean, I knew how to print but I did not know how to assemble, fix to do all the things. So that's important, like find you a company who can help you when you're stuck. Like if you send them an email, and they don't respond to you. Nope, move on to a new company.

Yeah, it's true where, like, that's something people don't think about in this role, is you're not trained to do anything. And there's all these different products that some have support, and some don't. And so were responsible of learning how to use that tool. So that is great to add to your grant. Like I live by this because they have support my 3D printers came with teacher training for you. I can't remember I did not have to build them. I remember watching you like on Instagram, like Oh, no. Or you like you brought them home?


Jennifer Mahin  27:35

Not because I brought them home. Because I was like, I don't even understand these directions.


Naomi Meredith  27:40

It's like ultimate IKEA, like, oh, no, it's like AP, IKEA building.


Jennifer Mahin  27:45

What was so great, though, is like later on when I had issues with them, which were issues that I just didn't know how to like fix, or I put something together wrong. They they were like, if it's a time, because the Thursday time didn't end up working for me. Sometimes they're like, we'll meet with your kids, we would actually love to train your kids to pull this for you. So you don't have to be like so let's meet with your kids. Let's do this. And I'm like, yes.

Did it work? 


Jennifer Mahin  28:09

Yeah.I mean, they met with my kids wants and helps me fix it. And after that it was more of me, like logging on in summer trying to just do some stuff like that. But it was nice having to meet with my kids and trying to fix it with them and troubleshoot and like talk about the skills they learned from that.

Yeah, and that's like stuff, that's real STEM actually, that's like for fixing the 3d printer. That's real life learning that in the grant, like if it breaks, the children will learn how to fix it. And if they don't, then they have to stay with me another year. But anyway, anything else that I missed when it comes to grant writing or anything else you want to share? Because I think this is so so insightful, and also encouraging that you have done this, you are a teacher, you have done this and it has worked.


Jennifer Mahin  28:58

Thank you. I just think the biggest thing is like, you're not going to get every grant and that's okay. But don't get discouraged. Because you know, I got two and then I didn't get two, I got three and then I didn't get one. You know what I mean? Like, definitely identify your need, and you have to prove why you need this why it's important. So identify your need and just don't give up like you're not going to like instead keep trying.

Yeah, I think that's great. That is super great advice. And probably like it sounds like to spread your wings don't do just one. Put your feelers out there from multiple because you never know.

Reach out to other STEM teachers on social media because they're gonna help you like I that's that's a question like you said, you get a lot. I get a lot. I get emails about it all the time. And you know, I think that's what's great about St. Peters is we're so willing to help. And we want like we want to tell you what works and what doesn't work because we went through it and like learn from our failures.

Yep, yep. 100% Yes. Maybe don't get a printer you can build. I'm just kidding. Maybe it worked out. It worked out. Don't get them Jimmy robots. Yeah, I guess those were some of the I don't know what I've bought those bad. I'm sure I'll think about I have bought some bad stuff. Oh, you know what I did. I did a grant for video production tools. So I bought tripods super cool. All this other stuff. And I added in like costume props, because they had a vision, like the little kids could be like community helpers in the videos. But like, The costumes were so tiny. They're like for a two year old. And like, nobody can wear them. It's super awkward and like, weird stuff. I was like, Why did I put that in there? This is so dumb.


Jennifer Mahin  30:39

I love that. I'm glad I'm not alone. But I think mine was more expensive.

I don't know, those costumes are extended. I think they're in my closet. They make me mad every time I look at that.


Jennifer Mahin  30:50

You have to leave them there. Because obviously you got them. Look at them. And think about that when you you know, apply for money next time had like.

Maybe if I teach pre K STEM, they can wear it? I don't know.

I am so excited to talk about this topic today; setting up your Makerspace. I have to be honest, this has taken a lot of trial and error in my own classroom to figure out systems and routines that worked for all grade levels, K-5.

I definitely had moments where during the lesson things weren't working out, whether it was where I put the supplies, what supplies was being used… (I definitely have some stories to tell you about that!) These are my tips and tricks to help you get started right away so you can have a great foundation in your own classroom and not have to go through all of the mistakes that I made.

I will be sharing with you three major tips and breaking down each of those tips so that you can have a great Makerspace year.

The first thing when getting started with your Makerspace is decide on the storage and space, you're going to house everything.

Now this is definitely up to you and a case by case situation; all classrooms are different. I was very lucky! Ehen I got my brand new job, I was gifted a brand new classroom. I felt like I had won the lottery! But I know that's not the case for everybody.

Some people may prefer having one designated small location where it has all the Makerspace supplies. Some might have materials spread out along the room. Whatever you decide, make it work best for you. Now, we will talk about organization later on in this episode, but really figure out what space do you have to work with.

You can make it all work, just work with what you got!

Once you have that figured out, decide if you are going to have a grab-and-go method where students are going to grab their materials from that location or locations and take it back to their seat, or if you are going to pull out bins as needed for the project. There are benefits to both and I actually use both methods for different times of the year.

I will start off the year K-5 by pulling out bins of specific materials I want the students to be using. My Makerspace is spread out along my classroom, and everything is organized at kid-height. I will have specialty items in the closet for specific projects put away in my cabinet, but the majority of materials are out on the floor.

Even when you think about when you're shopping at a store, you might ask, “Do you have anything in the back?”, I usually don't have a whole lot hiding in my closets. I just don't have room for extra things!

Everything is out in my classroom at kid-height. I get started by pulling out the bins so whatever specific materials that students will need for their project, they will grab the items that they're allowed, or however many I say they can get, and then bring those items back to their seats.

For younger students, if this is hard for them to remember how many, even if you write it on the board, a simple tip that I have for this. Grab a little sticky note, write a number. Let's say I want them to have three straws, I'll write the number three. Then I'll draw three dots on the sticky note and put the sticky note on the bin.

This is something I will definitely use even if the students are grabbing things from the locations in my Makerspace it helps so much so that helps build their independence. Then, they're not relying on me asking, “How many straws can I get?” This simple little trick has just been a great hack in my classroom.

Another major thing when setting up your Makerspace in your classroom is have designated locations for projects. Now I know this is actually one of the most tricky things in classrooms because some teachers even see all the kids in the whole school the entire week!

You definitely want to make sure you have space for all of those projects. (Now I do have a tip that will make storage a lot easier later on in this episode; and you're definitely going to thank me later for this one!)

Think about where those projects are going to be stored. I like to have on my open shelves, a shelf for each grade level. I just have the grade level written down on an index card with an arrow pointing to the shelf. For smaller supplies, I have a big fabric box from IKEA, the fold- out boxes, I can take apart and pop up whenever I need. Students will place their loose materials in a grocery bag or Ziploc bag with their plan inside. Then, the bags will go in the bucket at the end of class.

This is really helpful after I teach the mini lesson in our group meeting area, I'll pull out that bucket I might even pull out all the bags and lay them in a row on the floor to help students get their materials faster. This little trick has just worked for so many different types of Makerspace projects.

Not only are you setting up those materials, but set up a place where the projects can be stored when the class is done for the day.

The second major tip when setting up your Makerspace is the organization of your materials. Now keep in mind, I was given a brand new classroom, so some of the furniture is very expensive in there. I will look up other things that are very similar that can help with your organization as well.

Before I start asking for donations, I like to have my organization system set up first. That way I know how much of things that I can ask for and actually hold on to. This is really important! Instead of asking for supplies, let's get organized first! When you are organizing all of your bins and drawers and buckets, make sure to label all of your things with pictures and with words. (We talked about this in Episode 1 when you're creating your systems and routines.)

This is a great tip and helpful for all learners because that way they know where things go, they might even learn new vocabulary of what things are called. Also as a teacher, you will know where everything goes too! I swear, you will find things on the floor no matter how much you have a class clean up. This will help you know where everything goes in the classroom.

Even further with your organization, I like to have different categories and locations for those different types of materials. I have a cardboard station where all of the little cardboard pieces will be; thin cardboard that will cut into pieces, cardboard tubes, eggs cartons… anything that is cardboard related will go in one section (and those are labeled, of course!)

The other station is the paper station. I will have all of the construction paper set up for them, lined paper for planning, scratch paper for building and for planning, and graph paper. All of those can be found together to make it a lot easier for what they're looking for.

Finally, are the Makerspace items, the other little fun things that they can build with; the pom poms, popsicle sticks, cups….all of those are found in the same location. In another part of the classroom, I have all of the crayons, glue sticks and scissors.

Now when I first got started, I thought it was a really good idea to have a big bucket of crayons and place it on each table group for kids to use. The older kids had no problem with this.

I distinctly remember it was my first week teaching STEM, and I had 1st grade. It had been a while since I had 1st grade and taught them. I taught 1st grade when I was student teaching and then 2nd grade my first couple of years when I was teaching, So it had been a little bit of a while. I hear crying and think, “Oh great… Who's crying? Why are they crying??”

I go over to the table and the kids are telling me, “Oh! He's not sharing the crayons.!” I say, “Well, okay. You need to share the crayons! The crayons are here for everybody!”

Instead of giving the crayons back, he decided to put the crayons that he had taken in his mouth, chew them up and spit the crayons into the bucket. So nobody could use the crayons at that point…. and then there were more tears.

I knew I had to change my structure of even just how crayons were in my classroom.

For some time, I did use little supply boxes. In each box there was a pack of crayons, scissors, glue sticks, 2 pencils and an eraser.

I also found out quickly the lids kept coming off of those buckets and they weren't the best quality. The pencils were getting mixed up and the Kindergarteners were really excited that they had scissors in their box. (I don't think they had scissors in their supply buckets in their classroom always out.)

So, here has worked best for my crayons, glue sticks and scissors and markers. I have them in one area of the classroom. These actually get used more than my Makerspace. I have the crayons in little metal tins with a little handle and buckets can go on each table. This is really great when students are helping pass out supplies, they can carry these buckets. Or if I'm passing them out really quick in between transitions, this has worked great. Two students can share one bucket which is way better than a giant bucket in the middle of the table.

Then I have an another container for the glue sticks and the scissors. Sometimes I might only need crayons for a Makerspace activity or for something else, students might only want crayons.

Now it's also helpful having the scissors and glue sticks separate because the younger students love playing with the scissors and you don't want anybody accidentally cutting their hair. (Not saying that ever happened to me! Wink, wink.)

Markers are in little drawers that are organized by color. If students want to use markers for a project, they can go grab the colors that they need. On each of the tables in the classroom, I keep this out year round, are metal buckets with two big erasers and sharpened pencils for all the kids to use whenever they want. Those simple materials are really easy to grab whenever needed.

Finally, when setting up your Makerspace after you have figured out the space, you have everything ready to be organized, you're ready to collect items. In Episode 3, we talked more about how to get creative when gathering supplies. There's some tips and tricks to help you be creative when collecting supplies. Also at the end, I talk about a spreadsheet you can download for free, where I inventoried my whole classroom Makerspace supplies included, that will help you get an idea for what you might want to collect for your classroom.

I did mention you want to create a space where you students can put their projects. This if you don't get anything else from this episode, this is something I want you to remember; small items make small projects They take less time to build, they take up less storage space, they take up less use of materials.

On the flip side, big items make big projects, they take longer to build, they make bigger groups, and they use more items to build. Also think about the amount of tape! (You know how I feel about tape!)

I learned this the hard way. I let students create whatever size project they wanted and I didn't have room for anything. I ran out of supplies so fast, that I didn't even have enough for the same classes in one day. When I shifted my mindset to where projects can be smaller, be a prototype and accomplish the same task, it's okay! It really changed how materials are being used in my classroom.

When I'm asking for donations, I actually don't ask for large pieces of cardboard, big milk jugs, water bottles, I don't have room to store that. They're awesome to build with, however, in my classroom space, I don't have room for that. I really aim for smaller items that can easily be stored and I can get a lot of it. Again, I have those smaller projects and I have more room to store them.

If you're thinking about a size, what is a good size? Think about a large gallon sized Ziploc bag. I try to aim students, if possible, to create something that could fit in that bag. Now there are some exceptions to some of the projects, but we're not making ginormous things that have nowhere to go in the classroom.

Creating a donation letter can be very helpful. Instead of sending a mass email out to families, maybe you could think about sending that donation letter to one grade level a month and you can build connections with those families. Each month could be a different grade level. In turn, if you have a specific project that you are going to do with a grade level, you could send out a donation letter to that grade level and very specific items that are specific to that project.

You probably will get a better response with a smaller group and that way, and then you can really target what you need for the project.

Also for specialty items, sometimes I'll just send out a staff email and see if anybody has that at home. For example, I needed bubble wrap for a projec. I sent out an email and the next day, all these people brought in bubble wrap for me.

I might even ask students in the class during a project for items. I needed more grocery bags to store our supplies. I didn't have a lot at home (I really try to use reusable bags; not perfect, but I really try!) and we ran out of grocery bags in our classroom. I told the kids, “Hey, whoever brings in grocery bags tomorrow, I'll give you some Makerspace money that you can spend on your project!”

There's a lot of creative ways that you can gather materials and donations and easily get things for your classroom.

I also have a few places for dropping off materials. In my building, I have a box by my classroom and in the front of the building. I would love to add another box in the teacher's lounge. So just really great high traffic areas where students and families can drop things off that can be used in my room.

Another way to gather supplies in your classroom is to have students deconstruct. Now some students are obsessed about taking things home, which is awesome. Some kids really don't care. They loved the building process, but they don't have a desire to take it home. So after they take a picture, and Flipgrid, Seesaw or any other platform that you're thinking of, students can take apart their projects and then put away the supplies like be can be reused for other projects. This is a great little in the moment mini lesson to talk about conservation and materials as well.

On the last day of your projects, while students are deconstructing, just make sure you leave enough time for them to put everything away and clean out those bags. I will also reuse bags when possible if they don't have any holes or they're not broken. The more that you can reuse in this space, it's just really great. You can get more life out of all those materials.

Create Your STEM Lab School Supply List | #1 List Current Assets

stem-lab-school-supply-listSome STEM spaces are fortunate enough to have supplies already stocked from previous teachers. Others are bare bones and have nothing to work with. Wherever your status is, take stock of what you have. Also ask, “Will this be used?”

It’s ok to get rid of things as well! No, you won’t need the CD player “just in case”. Be realistic about what is available, the space given and who will be using the space. 

 

Create Your STEM Lab School Supply List | #2 Create a Budget

stem-lab-school-supply-listOnce current items are assessed, if possible, create a budget. Understand the guidelines for your school and deadlines when money needs to be spent. 

Something to keep in mind is a class set is not required for most items. Think about how students can use the materials in pairs and also small stations. Check out my STEM Station post HERE

Especially trendy and technology items, those age-out quickly. Being stuck with fancy “paper weights” can be a pain but also make purchasing more items in the future not as convincing for those who provide the classroom budget. 

When creating my shopping lists, I look at multiple sources before purchasing. Don’t shy away from deals or even ask for them! 

Create Your STEM Lab School Supply List | #3 Plan Ahead

Likewise, create shopping lists for the current year, but also future years. Not everything will get purchased at once. However, create a plan of what you hope to gather in the future. 

Sometimes there are opportunities when community stakeholders and local businesses are looking to purchase items for schools. Having a ready-made list will make the decision making a lot easier. 

Finally, set aside some funds for repair costs. While not common, it’s hard being in a situation when an items needs repairs but there aren’t any funds to do so. 

Create Your STEM Lab School Supply List | #4 Consumables vs. Non-Consumables

Find a balance between consumable (items that are typically used once) and non-consumable items needed in the class. 

Some consumable items are inexpensive, but require a large quantity over time. The cost can add up fast! 

With non-consumable (items that can be used multiple times) be thoughtful in what products to choose. Some items are worth the higher price tag, which will be addressed in the next section. 

In addition, think about how these items can be used in multiple projects. Classic LEGO Bricks can be used in endless projects for grades K-5 and are worth investing in.

Create Your STEM Lab School Supply List | #5 Quantity vs. Quality

There are a lot of great, quality STEM materials that are inexpensive that are non-consumable. However, there are items that are quite the opposite. 

Think about how many students, on average, will be using the items. Often, purchasing a higher priced, durable item, is worth the cost. 

Compare Models

For example, the Code & Go Mice and Bee-Bots complete similar tasks. They are robots for primary students that use directional/arrow coding to move. For a general classroom, with about 24 students, I would recommend the Code & Go Mouse. They are inexpensive and will last through a typical class size. 

For use with more students throughout the year, like a STEM specials class, I would recommend the Bee-Bots. While more expensive, they are more durable and can withstand high use.

Create Your STEM Lab School Supply List | #6 Donations & Grants

Once shopping lists and budgets are created, think about ways to gather materials from outside sources. 

Again, many local businesses look for ways to support schools. It never hurts to ask! Writing grants also bring the opportunity to include higher priced items into the classroom space. 

The site I’ve had the most success with is Donors Choose. The site walks teachers through the grant writing process, creates a space for donations to be collected and even handles purchasing the items when funds are raised. 

Another option is to create an Amazon Shopping List. Like a wedding registry, friends and family can purchase items you’re hoping to add to the classroom.

Consumable Purchases

For consumable items, like cardboard, tape, and recyclables, consider asking families. Often, these are items that will be thrown away and can be given new life in a Makerspace. Emailing the school staff never hurts as well! There was a project where I needed bubble wrap, I sent an email, and got more than I imagined the next day.

Are you wondering how to start a makerspace in your classroom? What are some simple steps when getting started? Whether you are a classroom teacher or teaching in a STEM space, these go-to tips can help you set up a Makerspace by the end of the week!

How to Start a Makerspace | #1 Space

Before collecting materials, create a designated space where Makerspace materials and access will be stored in the classroom. By choosing the location, this will help determine how much materials you can actually have, not the other way around.

In this space, ensure that there is room for bins, shelf and/or drawers that are easily accessible for the kids. The goal is to have students be independent in this space; when choosing materials and cleaning up.

Also decide if this Makerspace will be an actual work area or a grab and go type of system. With my K-5 STEM classes, the grab and go method has been successful. However, some classrooms can be more conducive to the Makerspace being an isolated station.

How to Start a Makerspace | #2 Storage

Once the designated location has been chosen, decide how materials are going to be stored. Materials can pile up quickly and look like a trash heap! While having an abundance of resources is helpful, you don't want your classroom to look like another episode of Hoarders.

Keep like items together instead of a free for all. Items like thin cardboard, cardboard tubes and egg cartons can have their own bins. Smaller knick-knacks like beads, googly eyes, and buttons can each have their own smaller container inside of a larger drawer.

Having a system as to where items go, again, helps with the student independence and cleanup.

How to Start a Makerspace | #3 Labels

Create labels that include the name and the picture of the items in that location. Even for older students, I've found this method to be extremely helpful. Even for me as a teacher when I find random items in the classroom!

Also, think about how labels can be added and removed easily. Printing, cutting, then laminating the labels, and attaching with Velcro can be an easy method. Stocks of some items, especially specialty items, can change quickly.

Having a stock of material labels on hand will save time in the long run. That way, extra labels don't need to printed and created on the fly. In fact, this would be a wonderful classroom job! Designate a students to be in charge of organizing the Makerspace and labels at the end of each week.

How to Start a Makerspace | #4 Collect

Now that overall systems are put into place, it's time to collect materials. Since the majority of items in the space are recycled, families are usually very willing to gather materials at home. Sending home a list of requests, print or digitally, is extremely helpful.

Also, make sure to let families know to clean out any food containers and take extra bits off toilet paper rolls. Seems like common sense, but trust me, it's not!

I even create my own Makerspace collection system at home and bring to school. It isn't pretty, but we all know that those sparkling water boxes are magic for building. Unsure of what type of items work well for Makerspace? Just out my STEM Supply List blog post HERE.

How to Start a Makerspace | #5 Upkeep & Replenish

As the Makerspace is being used, you'll notice which items are popular with students. Thin cardboard, masking tape and cardboard tubes run out the quickest in my room! Sending out supply requests every so often can help replenish the space.

Also, enlist in your co-workers! There have been times when I've been in need of bubble wrap and have gotten piles of it the next day.

Keeping a donation box by your classroom door and by the front of the school can also help. Students, teachers and families will be reminded when they walk by. This also serves as a great holding area for when you're ready to organize the new materials. Make the donation box extra fancy by using a recycled box!

STEM Activity for Elementary Students | How Should I Use These?

Before jumping into building, have students thoughtfully plan by drawing and how they are going to create their design & write down the materials they are going to use. After they have built their first creation, challenge students to improve their design with the suggestion checklist.

Likewise, they don’t have to try all of the suggestions, but they are more than welcome to! Then have students share their work on the sharing page by either placing their design on up of the page, drawing their page or inserting a picture digitally.

 

Here are some ways these Engineer Inspiration boards can be used in your classroom:

  • Create a book of the Engineer Inspiration boards you collect and leave them as a station in your classroom.
  • Have hands-on homework weeks where you assign an Engineer Inspiration Board along with the planning pages
  • For a class reward or warm-up, display the Engineer Inspiration board on the big screen in your classroom and set a timer for students to create what they can in that time frame.
  • Need a quick sub plan idea? Print out these boards, place the planning pages in page protectors and leave out materials you want students to build with while you are away.
  • Use the Engineer Inspiration Boards during a station at a class party. Parties can still be fun and have an educational component!

STEM & Stories: Activity to Support Not a Box by Antoinette Portis


During my first year as a STEM teacher, I lead a club weekly on Thursday for the entire year. I ran 6 different clubs, the last being a Makerspace Club.  

While planning this club, I kept my live for literacy and picture books in ming. In fact, My growing STEM & Stories collection integrates books and a corresponding STEM activity that works for multiple grade levels. 

Let's dive into how STEM is integrated after reading the story Not a Box by Antoinette Portis.

After reading the story Not a Box {or listening to it online on YouTube}, students will first plan how they will create a marble maze or game out of cardboard and limited materials. I did just a marble maze since I had limited time with my 1st-5th grader club {45 minutes} and they were able to listen to the story, plan and build. Their planning can be done either on paper or digitally. 



They can also utilize the Design Thinking checklist to help them keep track of their progress along the way through this challenge. This is also helpful if you need to extend this activity into multiple days or even during different time blocks in one day. 



Keeping their plan in mind, they can build their design and make modifications when needed to have their game work. The maze is the most simple of the two challenges; all you need are straws {bonus points if they are neon}, masking tape, marbles and cardboard. With a basic sized shipping box from Amazon, you can get 12 pieces from all the flaps and sides. I had 24 students in my club so two boxes was all that I needed. 


Again, for a harder challenge that will most likely take longer, they can also create a different type of game using cardboard and materials of your choice. I have a couple of videos for inspiration that they can watch and reflect on before planning. 



Once students' designs are built, I would encourage students to create rules to their games as well as gain peer feedback. This is of course, depending on the time you have for your challenge.  

Of course, reflection is essential for continuing a growth mindset, and students can write, draw or even record using a tool like Seesaw, how the Design Thinking Process through this STEM activity worked for them. 


My STEM students always get so proud of their creations and want to take their work home. For this challenge, I let them take their work home since they created it out of consumable items. The marbles were fairly inexpensive any way and I let them keep that as well. They were soooo excited about this! 

I even sent home this sheet {that you can get for free!} with other resources that will be helpful and continue to spark their cardboard creativity. 

 Using Seesaw, I often have students take a video or photo of their work so they can continue that conversation at home with their families.

This is a great STEM challenge that has so many possibilities depending on the amount of time you have, the age of your students and materials you use. You can grab all of the printable and digital student sheets, here. Assorted Chenille stems: Replace once they are too twisted and bent

Masking Tape: Set clear expectations of how much tape can be used during projects or this will run out within a week


Velcro Dots: Perfect for labeling materials and also creating reusable STEM activities

Marbles: Technically, these are reusable. However, I seem to replace these each year as they roll into unseen corners in the classroom.

Felt Squares: These are a great size for little hands and this particular brand is a harder felt which is great for multiple designs.

Neon straws: Any straw works to build with, but neon is way more fun and colorful.

LEGO-like build plates: The original version can get pricey. These are compatible with real LEGO and helps make some structures more sturdy. They also work great in stop motion animation and green screen

Mixed bucket of LEGO: Of course, asking for donations might get you some as well. This is a great starter kit when on a budget. Add a bucket or two each year to add to the mix.
